Border Counties Rally offsets 14,000kg CO2e

This year’s Border Counties rally became the 18th UK rally to partner with Carbon Positive Motorsport, and in doing so will offset 14,000kg CO2e from this year’s event.

This year’s Border Counties rally became the 18th UK rally to partner with Carbon Positive Motorsport

Using Carbon Positive Motorsport's Rally event package, the event offset all its official organisers vehicles, and received the support of over 30% of event competitors who voluntarily supported their aims to mitigate the rally's carbon footprint. Using the service, each competitor's on-event carbon emissions will be offset by 200%.

The event welcomed 89 crews from across the UK representing the BTRDA, ANEEC, MG3 Challenge, MSUK English Rally Championship and the Northern Historic championships, to compete in 70km of forest stages in scorching hot weather.

Niall Cowan Jnr with Charlie Seyer-Payne returned to action on the Border Counties Rally in their MG ZR

Returning to the event were two of Carbon Positive Motorsport's ambassador crews. John Wink and Keir Beaton were wanting more seat time for his Scottish Rally Championship campaign, and the pair finished 8th overall. Niall Cowan Jnr with Charlie Seyer-Payne returned to action in their MG ZR only to unfortunately retire with an accident. Both crews are competing this year using the new Offset Your Season package.

At the end of a hot day with even hotter competition, the event was won by Elliot Payne and Patrick Walsh in their Ford Fiesta R2, 38 seconds ahead of Matthew Hirst and Declan Dear who competed offsetting their emissions in their Ford Fiesta R5.

Matthew Hirst and Declan Dear were second on the Border Counties rally and competed offsetting their emissions in their Ford Fiesta R5.

Speaking after the event, Andy Jardine, Clerk of the Course of the rally, said "The Border Counties

Rally is delighted that in its first year of carbon offsetting, competitors got right behind the scheme

and we were able to offset 14,000kg of CO2e.

"Forest rallying is facing a challenging time, and we have to do what we can to head off these challenges. The Border Counties Rally take place in some of Scotland’s best scenery and we all have to contribute to maintaining the environment that we live and play in."

Paul Glass from Carbon Positive Motorsport, added, "It's great to welcome and support another new event to our initiative, strengthening our ambition to help make motorsport and the environment sustainable for future generations to enjoy. Thank you especially to all the competitors who got involved in supporting the event's ambition to mitigate its environmental impact."
