McRae Rally Challenge builds on Knockhill’s Award-Winning Green Strategy

Updated: Jul 10

The Knockhill McRae Rally Challenge will once again partner with Carbon Positive Motorsport for its 2025 event, reinforcing their shared commitment to sustainable motorsport.

As part of this partnership, the full carbon emissions from all competing vehicles will be offset using Carbon Positive Motorsport’s world-class rewilding project based near Loch Ness. This initiative forms a key part of Knockhill’s wider environmental strategy and reflects both organisations’ determination to reduce motorsport’s impact on the climate while maintaining the excitement and heritage of the sport.

Set to take place on 20–21 September, this prestigious invitational rally will bring together three generations of the McRae family, competing alongside a star-studded field of 65 invited crews. With 40 miles of competitive stage mileage planned, the rally will once again deliver a fast-paced celebration of Scottish rallying and the enduring legacy of the McRae name.

Spectators can enjoy a packed programme of entertainment across the weekend, including appearances from guests connected to the World Rally Championship and track displays of legendary rally cars. These include Audi Quattros, Lancia Deltas, MG Metro 6R4s, and many other fan favourites from the 1980s and 1990s, including the 1984 World Rally Champion, Stig Blomqvist.

Stuart Gray, Knockhill Director of Events, commented,"We are delighted to be partnering with Carbon Positive Motorsport for the 3rd running of the McRae Rally Challenge at Knockhill. We have had a long-term commitment to environmental and sustainable projects at the venue, including the McRae Rally in 2022. Our measures were recognised by Motorsport UK with the award of the Sustainable Club of the Year in 2024, and the offsetting of the McRae Rally, will be a statement to all competitors, spectators, the media and fans across the country of our continuing drive towards a sustainable future for motorsport."

Knockhill Racing Circuit, Scotland’s national motorsport centre, continues to lead the way in sustainable motorsport. In 2024, the venue was named Motorsport UK’s Sustainable Club of the Year in recognition of its ambitious and wide-ranging environmental programme. This includes a goal to generate 30% of its own electricity by 2027, the installation of EV charging points, tyre recycling, LED lighting upgrades, and an active tree-planting programme in partnership with Forestry and Land Scotland.

The circuit’s partnership with Carbon Positive Motorsport plays a key role in its plan to fully offset emissions from all car racing championships by 2026 – a commitment already extended to the Scottish Legends and ModSports series, and now in place once again for the McRae Rally Challenge.

To support the rally’s environmental message, Carbon Positive Motorsport will also debut its new Positive About Motorsport event unit at Knockhill. Created to inform and inspire, the unit offers practical ways for competitors, spectators, and organisers to contribute to a more sustainable future for the sport.

Among the invited guests will be Carbon Positive Motorsport ambassador Ashleigh Morris, who won the Ladies’ Award at the 2022 edition of the event and continues to champion sustainability in UK rallying.

Paul Glass, Director of Carbon Positive Motorsport, said "We are delighted to support the McRae Rally challenge for the second time by providing our unique world class carbon offsetting package. We are also excited to be taking our new event unit along, which is about inspiring and educating everyone on how we can all contribute to helping make our sport and the environment sustainable for future generations to enjoy. We're just finalising the details of what we are sure will be a feature packed addition to the action for event visitors and guests – we will be announcing more details of that in the coming weeks."

Spectators at the McRae rally challenge can enjoy track displays of legendary rally cars like this Colin McRae Subaru Impreza.
