Sustainable Rallying at Nicky Grist Stages 2025

Updated: 5 days ago

Carbon Positive Motorsport continues their long-term partnership with the 2025 Nicky Grist Stages.

The 2025 Nicky Grist Stages will take place on Saturday 12 July – with the famous Route 60 stage returning for the first time since 2018 as part of a fresh, challenging 45-stage-mile route.

The Quinton Motor Club-organised event celebrates 16 consecutive years of title sponsorship from Nicky Grist Motorsports, and will run on both NRW and MOD land in and around the Mynydd Epynt military range.

Thanks to the support of Powys County Council, Builth Wells Town Council, Builth Wells RFC, and the local community, the event will once again be based in the heart of Builth Wells – with the start in Strand Street, the finish alongside the River Wye, and the service area on the Groe.

The compact route includes stages in Monument, Halfway, Crychan (renamed Bowlsey in memory of Pete Bowles), and Route 60 – with two loops of four stages, split by a mid-day service. The rally will be a counting round of the Protyre Autocare BTRDA Rally Series, Pirelli Welsh Rally Championship, HRCR Rally Master Challenge, TCS Plant Rally Challenge, and ANWCC Rally Championship.

Carbon Positive Motorsport is pleased to continue its partnership with the Nicky Grist Stages for a fourth consecutive year, supporting the event’s sustainability efforts by enabling all competitors to offset 200% of their carbon emissions from competition-based fuel usage. Since the partnership began in 2022, more than 45 tonnes of CO₂e have been offset through the event – with all proceeds supporting high-integrity UK-based carbon reduction and rewilding projects.

Last year alone, the initiative supported the planting of over 1,500 giant sequoia and 6,000 native broadleaf trees near Abergavenny, contributing to long-term biodiversity and habitat restoration.

“We’re proud to support the Nicky Grist Stages again in 2025, and to continue our shared commitment to making motorsport more environmentally responsible,” said Paul Glass, founder of Carbon Positive Motorsport. “This event has consistently shown what’s possible when organisers, competitors and the wider community work together with sustainability in mind. It’s a pleasure to contribute to an event that not only delivers a fantastic rallying experience but also leaves a lasting positive legacy.”

The Nicky Grist Stages will also continue its collaboration with GoSafe, the Wales Road Casualty Reduction Partnership, and will once again play an active role in Motorsport UK’s National Motorsport Week.

“I am delighted that we have got what is probably the most-liked stage of the Nicky Grist Stages back in the 2025 edition – Route 60,” says Nicky Grist. “Route 60 is such a fantastic stage with wonderful high speed and flowing corners that nearly everyone enjoys. I was also overjoyed when we found out that Storm Darragh did not affect us anywhere near as badly as other stages in Wales and I am looking forward to catching up with everyone at the event in Builth Wells in July."

Carbon Positive Motorsport continues their long-term partnership with the 2025 Nicky Grist Stages.

“At the beginning of the year there were some doubts as to whether we would be able to run the 2025 Nicky Grist Stages, thanks to the damage caused in the Welsh forests by Storm Darragh and military training operations combining to seriously curtail the stage mileage available to us on both NRW and MOD land,” admits Neil Cross, Nicky Grist Stages Clerk of the Course.

“However, with the invaluable co-operation and hard work of NRW, the MOD and Rally4Wales we have instead put together a fantastic route which brings back firm favourite stages and reconfigures old classics.”

To help reduce the wider environmental impact of motorsport, Carbon Positive Motorsport invites all competitors, teams, and supporters to consider offsetting their full season of activity through the Offset Your Season package. This simple and cost-effective initiative enables individuals to take responsibility for their fuel usage and travel across the year, supporting accredited UK-based carbon reduction projects that deliver measurable benefits for biodiversity, habitat restoration, and long-term climate resilience.
