Tuesday 29 October

The Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally saw the British Rally Championship title go down to the wire with Chris Ingram and co-driver Alex Kihurani taking BRC honours.

Chris Ingram and co-driver Alex Kihurani were crowned champions of the Probite British Rally Championship (BRC) after a stellar performance at the Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally. Their victory marked the thrilling conclusion of a competitive season, with Ingram, a former FIA European Rally Champion, guiding his Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 with remarkable precision through North Wales’ challenging landscapes.

The championship win was hard-fought. Ingram and Kihurani had to battle three other title contenders, including William Creighton, who, with co-driver Liam Regan, finished just 0.9 seconds behind after the opening stage. Despite using a points-boosting Joker and a flawless drive in his Ford Fiesta Rally2, Creighton couldn’t surpass Ingram’s pace, securing second place both in the rally and the BRC standings.

Reflecting on the victory, Ingram said, “What a relief. Will pushed so hard today, and we had to give everything we had. It’s been an incredible competition, and though it wasn’t an easy season, that makes it all the more rewarding.”

The Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally was also the decisive round for the Junior British Rally Championship (JBRC). Robert Proudlock, co-driven by Steven Brown in their Peugeot 208 Rally4, emerged as the Junior BRC Champion after a gripping battle with five other title hopefuls. Proudlock said: "What a year, it's been absolutely incredible. I am absolutely buzzing."

The event wasn’t only about racing, but also sustainability. This year’s Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally offset an impressive 47 tonnes of CO2e emissions through Carbon Positive Motorsport. The rally used an International offsetting project together with a certified carbon project in Abergavenny, Wales, featuring fast-growing sequoias and native broadleaf trees. This project not only captures ten times more carbon per hectare than other species but also revitalises a former commercial monoculture, enhancing biodiversity and supporting six of the United Nations’ sustainability goals.

Matthew Hirst and Declan Dear, ambassadors for Carbon Positive Motorsport, took first place in the inter-club category, underscoring the growing awareness of eco-friendly practices in rallying, and taking maximum scores for both their championships. Hirst said; ""It was a relatively relaxed day with no drama minus clipping a bale in Alwen. We're happy with a respectable pace against the BRC crews, who were able to recce the stages, and the Škoda Motorsport R5 on Pirelli tyres performed well. I’m looking forward to rounding off the year at the Wyedean Stages Rally.”

The rally’s unique sustainable approach reflects an active commitment to reducing motorsport’s environmental footprint. For Carbon Positive Motorsport founder, Steve Smith, who has been a long-time rally enthusiast, the day was a reminder of the beauty of Wales’ landscapes and the spirit of rallying. "I hope that, with collective efforts, rallying can maintain its heritage while aligning with eco-friendly practices." he said, adding, "We would like to thank the Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally organisers for working with Carbon Positive Motorsport for the third year in succession, here's looking forward to the 2025 event!"
